So Glasgow is about as different from Edinburgh in its feel as Montreal is from Toronto and NYC. Busy, commercial city that has a mix of very modern store fronts set under these very old buildings. It seems to be the cultural epicenter for music and art. Street performers line the pedestrian mall as well. The Glasgow school of art building was design by Remie MacIntosh and is quite impressive on the outside. The symphony, ballet and opera are here as well as rock, folk, etc.
Speaking of which Bill got us tickets to see Nancy Griffith. She was excellent. Her voice is still so rich and strong and she was able to turn a large venue into an intimate experience as she shared her music and recollections with us. Her music is as relevant today as it was nearly 30 years ago when I first started listening to her. Can't believe it has been that long! The Kennedys opened for her and then played with her. It was nearly 3 full hours of continuous music. We sat next to an older women who was wonderful and there celebrating her birthday with her family. It is interesting how much of our culture is present here in music, TV and movies. Much more socially conscious though with commercials on TV against date rape and ads in the subways reaching out to male rape victims and encouraging HIV testing. No heads in the sand here. Tomorrow we continue north in our rental car. Bill is much more confident about his driving than I am - there's a surprise.
