Today was my birthday...and we spent it in a very visually intense place.  Our day at Arches National Park was full of photographs. Laurie was disappointed in the weather but I went all Zen on the yoga teacher.

Arches National Park- So much to see!

As a photographer, you don't control the subject.  You do control what you do with it.  I told Laurie about a quote from John Lennon- "I'm an artist, and if you give me a tuba, I'll get you something out of it." That's our job.  To make something out of what we're given.  We struggled with rain, we struggled with snow, we struggled with fog.  We did our best with the tuba we were given.

A hearty few camped in this mess

We spent most of the day in the park, did a few short hikes when weather permitted, shot photos from the car when we had rain.  Laurie's National Park Pass got us in for free, otherwise the entry fee is $30 per car load.  While we didn't have to pay, it does bother me that some people may not be able to afford the admission.  It is a National Park, for the people to enjoy.  I do realize it takes money to run the parks.  I don't have an easy answer for this.....but I don't like it.

At the end of our visit we decided we would drive to Naturita, Colorado to spend the night.  Once you leave Moab there is very little out there.  The nearest town was Naturita, population 481.  The motel wasn't on booking.com and I had to google motels.  This was all I could find in that area, with the exception of Telluride, a ski town where the only available room was over $600 a night.

Snow hit us on one of the mountain passes, but we got through just fine.  The motel is nothing fancy, but it is clean.  We had my birthday dinner at the only open restaurant in town, a drive in.  Then back to to the hotel to look at our photos, get a shower, and get some sleep.

More tomorrow......weather moved in and a lot of the high roads are snowy.  We'll decide our destination in the morning.  Enjoy the slide show, which has a bunch of photos!
