Climbing higher
Laurie is here! This made me so happy!
I had a great day. It was wonderful exploring for the day with Laurie. I’m so happy she came to Colorado for a few days….it made me really happy.
We stayed in Denver for the first night as I figured she was coming from Savannah (sea level) and should have a little bit of time to adjust to the altitude. First night in Denver West at 6000 feet then we left this morning to climb higher. And we certainly did that with many of the places we visited over 10000 feet and a couple even higher.

A pic from Laurie's phone
I was careful to test O2 sats on both of us along the way. The first stop was at Arapahoe Basin ski area. I’ve skied there and brought Laurie several T-shirts when I visited. Today she was looking at sweatshirts and I told her to pick one out. She came all this way to see me and I just thought it was a nice gesture.
Laurie was a bit put off by the altitude (10500) at the base lodge and we took it very easy. We saw others sitting on benches before going to ski dealing with the same. You’ll notice people sitting around with their head in their hands just sitting very still…..and you know what they’re dealing with. The altitude there can really get to you quick so you MUST take it easy.

Loveland Pass is UP there
Sats for both of us were in the mid 80’s while at rest, while we are normally in the 97-98 range. As we came down the mountain to Dillon, a drop of only about 1000 feet or so, our sats shot up to the low 90’s. We were careful about this all day and were able to stay in the low 90’s all day.
We grabbed fresh fruit and a coffee for Laurie at the supermarket in Dillon. From there we decided to head to Leadville, also known as the highest elevation town in the U.S. Leadville’s elevation is over 10000 feet and just like A-Basin you can tell. You have to take your time and even walking from the car to the restaurant for lunch will get you breathing hard.

Downtown Leadville
We had a great lunch at a diner called the Golden Burro. We had coffee and shared a pastry at a coffeehouse. We drove around town and checked out a few of the sights being ever mindful to not walk too far. We shopped for souvenirs and I took Laurie’s photo in front of a Yoga studio which I guess would technically be the highest yoga studio in the U.S.
About 2 p.m. it started snowing and we decided to head back down the mountain. Snowy weather had arrived and weather reports predicted 8 inches this morning, but had dropped to around 5 at this point. We navigated snowy roads all the way back to Silverthorne, right on I-70 with plans to spend the night there. By the time we reached Silverthorne the forecast had dropped to around 3 inches.

Tallest yoga studio!
It was definitely snowing pretty hard when we arrived. We checked into a really nice hotel we got with credit card points (IHG this time, Marriott last night) and had appetizers and drinks in the restaurant next door. We walked out on the street and found windy snow that met the 3 inch forecast. It seems to have quit by around 9:30 p.m.
Tomorrow we’ll go where the day takes us. We have dinner plans with friends in Boulder tomorrow night and have all day to get there. We plan to take the scenic route. I’m hoping for sunny skies so we get better photos than the gray skies today gave us. Do look at the photo gallery as we have a bunch more.

Snow coming down the mountain
It was a simple day of wandering in a little town with the one I love. I think of everything we've been through this year. Surgery. 7 weeks of radiation treatments. Massively altering our life and time, struggling to get Laurie healthy again. I look at this simple day and see perfection. I cannot even remotely explain how happy it made me to be here, with Laurie, spending this simple day together.
I live for these days.
