Tonight is gonna be a short one. I plan on the photos doing a lot of the talking as we have to get up at 5:15 tomorrow and head to the airport. We're moving to our next stop, Denmark! Our flight leaves early and so do we. We're hoping the weather holds and lets us make our next destination.....it's supposed to get pretty sporty here.
We woke to rain, and that puts a damper on things...or so we thought. We first headed to the Maurpark Flea Market....which didn't happen. Not because it was Christmas, but because it was raining, nasty, and cold. Based on our observations of the rest of the day, they are the ONLY people in Berlin that let it affect them. The rest of the town was running on overdrive.
Our next stop was another Christmas market, at Alexanderplatz. We wandered through, and of course ate things we shouldn't, then wandered out. Laurie wanted to hit one of the art museums (listed in our what we saw list) and I wandered while she was in there. I wound up in the middle of an Egyptian wedding! Music, dancing, they were having a ball! They were using the museum as a backdrop for wedding photos, with all of the wedding party in tow.
It seems that Christmas day is wedding day here. We saw no fewer than 6 weddings in our travels. There were actually 3 wedding parties at the museum alone. Laurie came out of the museum, the wedding parties broke up and moved to other places.....as did we.
We weren't far from the Gendarmenmarkt, rumored to be the best of the Christmas markets in Berlin, so we headed that way to check it out. At this point I don't think there is a single market we missed in Berlin!
I was stopped at the gate and the guard wanted to search my shoulder bag. I opened it and he prodded by camera case and asked "what is?" I replied "camera case". He looked at me skeptically and said "where you from?" I replied "United States". He smiles and says "you come in!" End of search. Some folks like us out there.
After the Gendarmenmarkt, we had a wonderful dinner in a little German restaurant down an alley that had like 6 tables. It was called Sophien 11, and if we make it back to Berlin again...I'm sure we'll wind up there. After that we found a place for a couple of cigars and back to the hotel to pack.
We're all packed up now. Next report is from Denmark! Merry Christmas and Happy Hannuka everyone!
