Day 5: Goin' South
June 10, 2019
Our Airbnb, a typical New England style house. We had the top floor and it was a great place to stay. Two bedrooms and tons of space. It was a good one.
Our last day was a simple one. We got up, got packed, headed out of the Airbnb, and went to a diner for breakfast. This left us with ten hours until flight time and we're less than two hours from the airport. We amble down Route 1, the coastal route. We are in no hurry and we're taking in the sights.
Looking out into the coastal flats, Gooserocks , Maine
We ride through coastal communities, see the clam diggers in the mud flats, things are turning very green here. We haven't seen as many tourists as we expected to. Many places aren't open yet and have June 15 listed as an opening date. Season does start later up here but we always remembered a Memorial day/Labor day season. Apparently this has changed, and when we look back, the first part of June can be kind of dicey for beach weather.
Memorial Bridge, Portsmouth, New Hampshire
Clonk!
Portsmouth Naval Shipyard
We decide to have lunch in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. I haven't been there even though we lived up there, and it's been a long time since Laurie has. Portsmouth was always a shipyard town and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is there. It is known for submarine overhauls but don't expect to get too close. I couldn't spot any from the town. We walked across the bridge, took a few photos, and decided to have lunch.
Lunch was at a place called "Fezzwigs's Food and Fountain". It was an old school "tea room" with all matter of great baked goods, teas, coffee, etc. We had a nice lunch at a table on the sidewalk outside. It was quite pleasant and Laurie really enjoyed it. Our waitress was dressed to period style and was quite animated and fun! Laurie really enjoyed it.
After lunch, we head on into Boston to catch our flight. Boston traffic has not gotten any better in the 30 plus years we've been gone. We were stuck in bumper to bumper at 3 in the afternoon. Then again, I've been in a Boston traffic jam before at 2 a.m. It's just part of the game. The airport is practically downtown and getting there is a bit nuts.
It's funny that they make Canadians work a puzzle before they sell them fuel!
We arrive without incident at the airport and board our flight soon. Today's blog is a few paragraphs, a few photos, and after we've been home a day or two, we'll publish a synopsis with viewpoints from both of us. We plan on discussing our experiences and thoughts on going back to the place that "we" started.
Boarding soon..........Tennessee bound.
