Olde town, Frankfurt
We are here! The flight went exceptionally well. It left a little late but arrived half an hour early. Ya really can't ask for much more than that. We were flying on a 767-400 and it had the seat back tv sets....and I actually got to watch episodes of TV shows I like and hadn't seen yet. We both got a little (not a lot) of sleep on the way over. This, coupled with my getting up early strategy made this a MUCH easier transition than last year.
We arrived Frankfurt airport and had no expectations and no schedule for today. We picked up our bags, cleared customs, and stored out packs at "left luggage" at the airport (for a fee of course). We found ATM's in the terminal and got cash. This left us unencumbered and able to wander.

Inside the Frankfurt  train station
We took the S bahn train into Frankfurt, about a 14 minute ride. It's sort of like suburban trains in other cities. The Germans have an amazingly efficient train system....they hit all the marks and they really have things organized. We met a young lady originally from Ireland named Caroline. She is now is married to a German, and lives and works in Frankfurt. She gave us a few pointers and actually escorted us to the main area in central Frankfurt after we left the train. She was quite kind and made it very easy for us to navigate.

The hole in the mall.....Frankfurt
We wandered about in central Frankfurt. It is a large city with much going on, but it seems like a fun place to have a banking capital! We wandered street markets, and had something to eat in a street market that was mostly food trucks....German style! So far the food is great! We also got SIM cards for our phones, so we're able to communicate and call each other, as well as calling the states. Calls to the kids ran about 5-6 american cents a minute......a real bargain compared to the states calling Europe.

Our simple hotel, Frankfurt Airport
Our butts are dragging nonetheless. We returned to our bargain hotel across from the airport. It's quite clean and new. It's not super fancy but it's nice. I like it. And now I'm gonna shower and catch up on sleep. Tomorrow we meet Laurie's cousin David, and his wife Sheree. We take a rental car to St. Goar in the Rhine Valley. Castles tomorrow!
