Mist on the Alps
In Band of Brothers, Dick Winters discussed being in the German Alps and how beautiful it was......and how they hated to leave it. He then said "and then.....we saw Austria".
Bridges to hike the gorge
The hike was straight up a mountain, and when we reached the top, the walk continued up the gorge on metal walkways, cantilevered over the gorge. I'm an engineer....and I'll tell you...the guys that built this one deserve a beer. It winds for a kilometer or two up the gorge, looking down at the water, water falls, and fantastic vistas behind us. Eventually, we hiked into Austria, crossing the border. If you're coming to this neck of the woods, this is a must do. It was so great...we did it in the rain!
Hiking the gorge
We headed from there toward Fusch, deep in the Austrian Alps. Austria is so fantastically gorgeous it defies description. Rugged mountains going straight up, snow on the peaks, just one amazing view after another. Austria is such an amazing place. We passed a dozen places we'd love to stop......just to pass a dozen more.

Our room at Hotel Wasserfall
We arrived at our hotel, and man what a dive. What a terrible view. We had a bad dinner. And this is all bullshit. Our hotel is at the bottom of this narrow valley, with mountains climbing straight up on both sides. Great rooms, we had dinner in the dining room and the meal was probably the best we've had so far in Germany. Simply fantastic. And they call it Hotel Waterfall because a waterfall comes off the mountain behind it.
Kaiserschmarm for desert. Simply fantastic.
Dinner was.....amazing. I had what is basically deer schnitzel, and we shared a pancake desert called "Kaischersmarrn". I am quite sure it is illegal in the states as nothing this good could be legally obtained.
Tomorrow, off to Grossglockner...and the Grossglockner Auto road. Expect fantastic pics tomorrow!
